First, the study focused on two interpersonal perceptions that take on a key function in human dating, namely, the likability and humor ascribed to the dating partner (e.g., Alves, 2018; McGee & Shevlin, 2009). By foregrounding partner responsiveness as a key mechanism and demonstrating how even small design features like emoji inclusion can shape interpersonal perceptions, this study lays critical groundwork for future research. It opens avenues for examining how emojis function across various relationship types, cultural contexts, and communication platforms, ultimately enriching our understanding of relational processes in the digital age. The results across all three moderation analyses indicate that participants’ self-reported frequency of emoji use did not moderate the relationship between emoji use and perceived likability, closeness, or relationship satisfaction. While emoji use itself has significant effects on likability and relationship satisfaction, the frequency with which participants reported using emojis in their daily communication did not influence these relationships. Perceived partner responsiveness is a key determinant of relationship satisfaction, as it fosters intimacy Youmetalks review of features 83 and enhances marital satisfaction 26.
In regulated industries such as healthcare, law or finance, there may be limits on how emojis can be used in business communication. In these environments, clarity is critical, and using emojis can create confusion when you’re trying to explain something in detail or convey a sense of urgency. When used thoughtfully, emojis can say a lot with just one character.
The Role Of Emojis In Modern Communication: Are They Helping Or Hurting?
The new channels of communication are marked by ambiguity, interpretability, and personalization, characteristics shared by F2F communication. This challenges some established theories of media richness and CMC (Ishii et al., 2019). In this section, we review relevant studies covering emotions in computer-mediated communication (CMC).
How To Effectively Use Emojis In Your Marketing Strategy
In the age of online communication, sending texts alone can sometimes fall short of expressing how we feel. In dating apps, emojis often act like a shortcut for tone—flirty, friendly, awkward, or overly intense. A single symbol can change how a message feels, especially when you don’t know the person’s communication style yet. That’s why understanding emoji context can prevent misunderstandings and help you reply with the right vibe. However, it isn’t easy to understand what they mean or find all the emojis in one place. Today, emojis are a universal language that transcends linguistic barriers.
Positive and effective communication is essential for reducing relationship uncertainty and fostering confidence, closeness, and commitment between partners 30. CMC, particularly through text messaging, plays a significant role in maintaining relationships 31. Research shows that CMC can be as effective as FtF communication in reducing relationship uncertainty 32.
Survey responses regarding aesthetic/decorative use of emojis. To see which emojis are most common, we asked participants to list up to 10 of their most frequently used emojis. The laughing/crying emoji held the #1 spot across all three, but the rest of the rankings varied (Figure 7). This leads us to believe that the laughing/crying emoji expresses universal sentiments that are socially acceptable across all platforms, both public and private. Interestingly, the sideways glancing eyes emoji and fire emoji appeared in both Instagram and Twitter data, but not in the text messaging data.
How To Use Emojis In Business Communication
The table below shows the most confusing emojis of 2024, along with their frequently assigned meanings. Having said that, let’s see some general statistics about how most people use emojis before we dive into the way we use them at work, specifically. Then again, even these drawbacks can be alleviated by changing the way you use emojis to communicate. Furthermore, being able to monitor your remote team’s emotional well-being through the emojis they use might help you prevent employee burnout. On a more practical note, 83% of survey participants noted that emojis take up less character space, allowing them to communicate more efficiently.
A simple emoji can signal agreement, empathy, humor, or hesitation without adding extra text. Because chats move quickly, readers usually interpret emojis alongside message speed, relationship closeness, and conversation flow rather than as fixed symbols with one meaning. As hypothesized, statistical analyses revealed that online conversation starters containing four emojis after each sentence led to significantly worse impressions than one or a complete absence of emojis.
Additionally, emojis can enhance clarity in general online interactions 33 and romantic conversations 34. CMC also facilitates the sharing of personal information, which helps partners feel more connected 35, thereby increasing intimacy 36 and improving overall relationship quality 37,38. Text messaging is the primary use of smartphones, with near-universal adoption across age groups. With 100% of individuals aged 18–29 using their smartphones for texting 1, text messaging has become ubiquitous. The use and variety of emojis have also surged, particularly among young adults.
Facebook’s introduction of emoji reactions beyond the simple “like” button exemplified how platforms began recognizing the need for more nuanced emotional expression options. The findings demonstrate that there is a difference in emoji usage between public and private forms of communication, as we had originally predicted. However, we found that there are more unspoken rules and structure with the usage of emojis when they are being used through private communication such as text messaging. We believe this is because the personal nature of text messages makes the user feel pressured to put more thought into the messages their emojis might send.
Aside from that, emojis can also be used to direct the reader’s attention to relevant information, as seen in the example below. Yet, according to Adobe’s 2022 US Emoji Trend Report, 71% of survey respondents claimed to have used emojis in a work setting. The system lets you drill down into the detail of the emoji meaning. Emoji use has skyrocketed as both individuals and brands embrace them—so much so that Oxford Dictionaries named an emoji Word of the Year after seeing over a 3x increase in use in 2015 versus the previous year.
To mitigate the bias in this coding process, the authors met frequently to discuss the findings and selected papers. We provide the spreadsheet with its notes and decisions as Supplemental Materials to promote the reproducibility and analysis of our study. Lastly, systematic literature reviews are limited by the data sources and queries established by the research team. We did not include articles indexed in other research platforms (e.g., Google Scholar, Scopus), pre-printed versions (e.g., arXiv, SSRN), or non-academic outlets (e.g., blogs, industry reports). Including these datasets could provide more insights into the role of emojis in communicating emotions. With the prevalence of instant messaging and social media platforms, emojis have become important artifacts for expressing emotions and feelings in computer-mediated communication.
In doing so, we analyzed emoji frequency and usage patterns, and were able to see distinct differences in the ways in which our demographic used emojis to communicate. Our findings indicated that there was indeed an intra-user difference in emoji usage in public versus private spheres, but the ways in which these differences manifested came down to personal preference from user to user. Thus, depending on each person’s own social environment, the prepared conditions may have evoked different levels of familiarity. Also, the analysis of mirrored affective states was mostly preliminary in nature, mainly due to pragmatic concerns.
- In other words, you don’t need to respond to the 🙂 Smiling Face emoji with the same one, but you could use a similar symbol (😊, 😄, 😁) to mirror your interlocutor’s intent.
- Cherbonnier et al. (Cherbonnier and Michinov, 2021) designed a new set of emojis that conveyed six basic emotions with greater intensity and recognition when compared to Facebook emojis.
- Even familiar symbols can feel encouraging, neutral, or heavy depending on the emotion they carry.
- The green checkmark emoji is one of the more professional emojis with meaning on the list.
This can be due to decision paralysis or the increasing time it takes to find the emoji on the keyboard. However, this again can be remedied through recommendation, which theoretically allows the system to align itself with the user’s intended emotion and predict which emoji should be used. While recommendation algorithms are not relevant for every type of research work, designers should be aware of the findings and capabilities presented by such papers.
They are also a fantastic opportunity for people who are just beginning their English study journey to interact with native speakers. Honesty and trust are appealing when you’re doing business with a brand, and the right emojis can help convey that sense of authenticity. Used thoughtfully, emojis can help you connect emotionally with customers by expressing relatable feelings and highlighting shared perspectives. Under the right circumstances, emojis can help your message connect more effectively with the recipient. Some benefits of using emojis in business communication include the following. Just like in a conversation, the context in which you use emojis at work is vital.
On the other hand, downward communication seems less bogged down by these social conventions, as people in leadership positions tend to be less reserved with their emoji use. CNN’s survey also showed how this difference in communication styles across generations can cause misunderstandings at work by asking survey participants how they would respond to a coworker’s funny message. But, while we’re on the subject of the emojis we might use at work, let’s dive into how most people tend to include these symbols in their internal and external communication.
“Work life without emojis sounds boring to me, but I also understand that there are moments where they are not necessary,” McCarthy added. Above all, don’t use an emoji if you aren’t sure what it means, and avoid replacing words with emojis, cautioned Seamas Egan. That disconnect can lead to confusion, especially in professional communication, where tone already takes more effort to interpret. Marty Estelle Lundstrom, founder of Polished Professionals and co-founder and vice president of Manners Pro, echoed that point, noting that emojis can get lost in translation.
Emojis can be a simple way to gauge how employees are feeling, especially if you have a remote work plan or hybrid teams. Team members might use them to update their status or react to messages, offering quick insight into their mood or mindset. You can even encourage employees to choose an emoji that sums up their week. Despite the concerns, emojis are still widely used in professional settings.
They add energy to your communications and can make a message feel more engaging at a glance. In fact, according to Atlassian’s Teamwork Lab survey, 78 percent of respondents said they’d be more likely to read a message or open an email if it included an emoji.
